I’ve participated in a few internet arguments in my day, especially several years ago when social interaction on the internet was fairly new. It didn’t take me very long at all to realize that arguing on the internet was about as fruitful as an orange tree in the arctic. Occasionally, though, I will step into the ring for a few minutes, not to argue, but to present some facts that might be relevant to the discussion. If someone tries to bait me into an argument, I leave. After all, if I’m going to waste time, I might as well waste it doing something more fun!

Just this week I defended a friend on the internet when I saw that someone was criticizing him with false information. In the comment section, I pointed out that it’s one thing to disagree with my friend’s approach to ministry, but quite another to make a charge against him that was factually false. I corrected the inaccuracy…the blog author responded by defending his perspective…I made one more comment to clarify my point and moved on.

Over the past few weeks I have noticed quite a lot of internet arguing about the Elephant Room and Pastor James MacDonald’s invitation to Pastor T. D. Jakes. I have witnessed these arguments occurring in the comments section of some of the blogs to which I subscribe. I quickly grew saddened by some of it and bored by much of it. I hoped it would soon fade away. But after the Elephant Room event things only heated up.

For some of the bloggers and professional “discerners,” T. D. Jakes was not convincing enough or orthodox enough in his affirmation of the historical doctrine of the Trinity. Sigh. I believe he could have signed every orthodox confession and creed from the Didache to the BF&M2000 and some still would have screamed, “But he’s just faking it…he probably used disappearing ink!”

I love the internet because it is the people’s media. Anyone with access to a computer can publish his opinions and beliefs for anyone else in the world with a computer to access. And, at least at this point, it’s tax free (Keep your hands off our internet you evil politicians!). What I’ve learned through the years is that arguments that have the best chance of changing my mind on an issue are the ones that are Scripturally based with a spirit of love. As Pastor James has so eloquently pointed out…

Truth > Grace  = Fundamentalism (“sever the relationship when needed”)

Grace > Truth = Liberalism (“compromise the truth when needed”)

Jesus = FULL of Grace & Truth (John 1.14)

So I don’t even listen or pay attention to the name-calling, angry, self-proclaimed “discernment” people. Neither do I give any time of day to the “What we believe doesn’t matter as long as we’re sincere and loving” crowd (not that I ever gave them the time of day). I really only want to listen to those who are attempting to produce a truth-filled, grace-saturated articulation of a position on a matter. Show me that and I’m all ears.

I am absolutely thrilled with what God is doing in Harvest Bible Chapel and in the Harvest Bible Fellowship.

21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” – John 4.21-24

The Hour is Now!

USA Today reports:

Now, Rev. Mark Driscoll, the pastor of Seattle’s Mars Hill Church who is known nationwide for his blunt talking sermons and in-your-face evangelism, has seen the sex trade revving up amid the rubble.

Driscoll and James MacDonald of Harvest Bible Chapel in Chicago raced down to Haiti to assess the damages to the church infra-structure and launch a drive to rebuild places of worship, churcheshelpingchurches.org.”

What a question! If I could recommend only one book besides the Bible, what would it be?

My initial thought would be Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan because it has stood the test of time as a classic that has encouraged the faith of untold numbers of Christians. But, it is a long book and a difficult book to read unless you get a modernized version.

My next thought is Desiring God by John Piper because no book I know of has had such a profound impact on so many of my friends, and myself. James MacDonald has said that it is probably the greatest book written in our generation. He could very well be right.

But at this point in my journey, if I had to pick out one book to give a person other than the Book of books, I think i would choose… (more…)

One of the main reasons I decided to align myself with the Harvest Bible Fellowship is because of an emphasis on God’s Word in everything.

Liberal churches deny the veracity and trustworthiness of the Bible. Pragmatic churches either “hide” the Bible (seeker-driven churches) or choose to focus only on the portions of the Bible that help a person fulfill their dreams (prosperity gospel churches).

But at Harvest Bible Chapel, we (along with many other Bible-based churches) believe that the Bible is God’s Word and the whole Bible is worthy of our diligent study:

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth. – 2 Timothy 2.15, HCSB

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,  that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. - 2 Timothy 3.16-17, ESV

If you come to Harvest Bible Chapel, bring a Bible. We will open it together to a section of Scripture and discuss it’s relevance to our lives, seeking God’s help in understanding and applying it.

If you need help understanding the role of the Bible in your life and how to approach God’s Word, we highly recommend God Wrote a Book by Pastor James MacDonald of Harvest Bible Chapel, Rolling Meadows, Illinois.

Some of you may know that Pastor James MacDonald of Harvest Bible Chapel of Rolling Meadows, IL, was a contestant on Dick Clark’s The $25,000 Pyramid several years ago. Late this morning one of our church members called the office to tell me she was pretty sure she had just seen Pastor James in the studio audience of The Price Is Right. I shot Pastor James an email and he confirmed it. This time he wasn’t a contestant, but in the studio audience, seated right behind Contestants’ Row.  I captured these photos on my MacBook with this nifty widget called “Screenshot Plus”:

Crossway Books, 2002

What makes a Christian book outstanding? A combination of several factors: First, it must be Biblical. The book’s premise must be rooted in a proper Christian worldview. When referring to Scripture, it must be accurate and provide a valid interpretation.

Second, it must be compelling. Alistair Begg has said, “I never cease to be amazed by the ingenuity of those who are capable of taking the powerful, life-changing text of Scripture and communicating it
